Our Story
For Leighton Calder, the process is as important as the final product. The dedication with which each piece is produced demonstrates an appreciation for wood and the fine craft of carpentry.
Accordingly, the design philosophy rests in allowing the quality of the wood to speak for itself. The designs are simple, but inspired, as they believe that well-presented wood can be both an object of inspiration and possess a practical independence.
Leighton lives in Cape Town, and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Fine Arts from UCT, with a particular emphasis on process based art. Leighton Calder Furniture is his most recent venture, providing the South African and international market with finely crafted furniture.
As Leighton works closely with his clients, the choices of wood, finish and dimensions can all be customized. Commissions are also welcomed and an inclusive design process is adopted to ensure the final piece expresses exactly what the client has in mind.
